Gov. Perry Names Bugg Chair of Texas Economic Development Corporation

AUSTIN – Gov. Rick Perry has appointed J. Bruce Bugg, Jr. of San Antonio as president and chairman of the Texas Economic Development Corp. for a term to expire at the pleasure of the governor. Bugg will serve as senior advisor to the governor on the state’s economic development strategies and initiatives, and provide leadership in coordinating the economic development efforts of the Texas Economic Development Corp., the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism, the Office of the Secretary of State, and state and local economic development partners.

“Mr. Bugg’s background and accomplishments make him extremely qualified for this position,” Gov. Perry said. “His leadership and business-building experience will help strengthen our economic development efforts and ensure that Texas remains the best state for business.”

“I am honored by this appointment,” Mr. Bugg said, “and I look forward to helping Gov. Perry build on his record of attracting businesses to Texas and maintaining our state’s economic success.”

Bugg is chairman and CEO of Southwest Bancshares Inc., Bandera First State Bancshares Inc., San Antonio Capital & Trust Holdings LLC, and Argyle Investment Co. LLC, and is chairman of the Bank of San Antonio. He is chairman and trustee of the Tobin Endowment and chairman and president of the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, a board member of the Santa Fe Opera, and a board trustee of the Texas Research Park Foundation, the McNay Art Museum and St. Mary's Hall. He is also a past board member of Humanities Texas and past chairman of the San Antonio Cancer Therapy and Research Center Board of Governors.

Bugg received a bachelor's degree and law degree from Southern Methodist University.
