Lady Eagles play for state crown Friday
WALLER— The Barbers Hill Lady Eagles are returning to the state title game this weekend to face the Melissa Cardinals after clinching a huge win over Smithson Valley.
On Thursday afternoon at Waller High School, the Lady Eagles used a dominating pitching performance for Hailey Nutter in a 4-0 victory over Smithson Valley in the Class 5A Division I State Semi-final game.
Barbers Hill picked up all the runs they needed in the bottom of the third inning.
AshLynn Cooper doubled to make it 1-0 and then scored on a Nutter sacrifice fly and the advantage was 2-0. Aybrie Corona then homered to left field, scoring two more runs and the Lady Eagles led 3-0.
That was more than enough for Nutter, who pitched a no-hitter and finished with 18 strikeouts. The senior walked only one. She threw 111 pitches, 75 of which were strikes.
Zoey Hood, Savannah Barrientos and Bre Norman also added hits for Barbers Hill.
The Lady Eagles will face Melissa on Friday night at Red and Charlene McCombs Field on the campus of the University of Texas.
