West slips past East 63-62 in Basketball
WINNIE– Those watching the SETCA All-Star boys' basketball game were treated to an exciting ending as the West got a free throw with a second left to knock off the East 63-62.
Winnie was the place to be Thursday, June 5, as hometown boys Jaxson Pitre and Jarrell Smith of East Chambers made significant contributions to the West team.
Smith had a huge steal and score for the West down the stretch, pulling his team within one at 61-60 with 47 seconds left.
Dre Charlot of Barbers Hill then gave the West the lead by hitting a couple of free throws for a 62-61 lead.
After the East tied the game with a free throw, Jaxon Woods of Goose Creek Memorial gave the West the lead for good by connecting on one of two free throws.
The West led after a quarter of play 19-17 and then started the second period on a 7-0 run capped off by a Woods three-pointer and a 26-17 lead.
Smith then assisted on a three-pointer by Jackson Stovall of Tarkington to make it 29-17. The East then went on a run of their own and closed the first half on a 13-2 run to trail 31-30 at the half.
In the third quarter, Pitre came up with a steal on one end and then connected on a three-pointer at the other end to give the West a 38-36 lead.
In the final period, Pitre scored on an off-balance jumper again, and the West's advantage was 56-51.
The East regained the lead on a three-pointer by Zacc Sells of Kountze to make it 61-58 with 2:10 remaining in the game.
Pitre finished with five points, while Smith chipped in three. Charlot added five points on the night.
