Library hopes to color your world
ANAHUAC— The Chambers County Library System began its summer program early this month with a “Color Our World” theme.
Throughout the summer, the Anahuac location will offer a variety of kids, teens and adult events each week. There are also prize drawings, giving incentives for each book read over the summer.
“We always look forward to the summer reading program because it’s like our GatorFest,” librarian Aquilia De La Cruz said. “It is six weeks full of a lot of activities. We really enjoy the kids coming.”
Some families can’t plan vacations, so they plan to attend the reading program, De La Cruz added.
Each day that children aged zero to 11 read for 20 minutes, they get to fill out a gameboard piece, and when the gameboard is complete, they can enter for a chance to win a grand prize.
De La Cruz said the kids are excited, explaining that every five days, the kids read, they get coupons, and she is always happy to see them bring in their game boards.
Each day, an adult or teenaged 12 to 18 reads for 20 minutes or reads 20 pages, they can fill out a bookmark. Once five spots are filled, they can enter a weekly drawing.
For kids, the next event will be Tuesday, June 24, from 2 to 3 p.m., centered around first responders. Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Santiago “Turbo” Turrubiate and Paw Patrol’s Chase will be there, and hot dogs and snow cones will be provided.
For teens, the next event will be Wednesday, June 25, from 2 to 3 p.m., and participants will have the opportunity to create a cupcake masterpiece. Supplies will be provided by Crazy ‘Bout Cupcakes and registration is required.
For adults, the next event will be Thursday, June 26 and Friday, June 27. Participants will be tasked with searching for hidden shapes and colors for a chance to win a prize.
“My staff has worked very, very hard trying to plan fun stuff for them,” De La Cruz said. “I’m proud of them and I’m proud of our community.”
De La Cruz thanked the many sponsors, saying the library would not have been able to host the program without their help, and she thanked the county for their support.
There is still plenty of time to register, as the final event is July 12. To register for the summer program, visit https://www.chambers.lib.tx.us/summer-reading.
Participants should also stop by the library to grab their gameboard or bookmark to participate in the prize drawings and to grab their goodie bags.
Grand prize winners will be announced at the end of summer parties, which will be Tuesday, July 15, for kids and Wednesday, July 16, for teens.
