The Ladycats played the Deweyville Pirates on Friday night in hopes of making history. The Ladycats entered the game at 7-0 in district and riding a 15 game win streak. The Pirates came in with a 5-1 district record and a chance to even things up with the Ladycats. A lot was on the line for both teams.

The Pirates make a quick two before the Ladycats rattled off 10 unanswered points. Both teams traded buckets through the end of the quarter, and the Ladycats ended the first up 16-10.

The second quarter, things slowed down a lot as both teams scored 6 points, and the Cats took a 22-16 lead at the half.

The typical full court pressure was getting sliced up, which allowed the Lady Pirates to keep things close.

"Typically our pressure is what allows us to get out and run and score easy buckets, but Deweyville did a great job of beating our pressure and getting a lot of second chance points in the first half," Coach Jeff Martin said.

The Ladycats made adjustments and came out in the third quarter firing on all cylinders. They outscore the Lady Pirates 19-9, behind threes from Samantha Rose, Bailey Luke and Gabby Lavine, taking a 41-25 lead into the fourth.

Senior Gabby Lavine led the quarter with 7 points, and senior Dacey Simmons pitched in 6. Simmons added another 6 points in the fourth to help close out the game, 54-32.

Simmons was the leading scorer with 14 points, Lavine had 10, Lauren Hickman had 8, Luke and Champagne both had 7.

It was a total team effort to get that win and everyone did their part to make it happen. Winning this game puts the Ladycats at 8-0 on the district season, and they clinched their first district championship in 31 years.

The Ladycats will host 29-1A district champion Spurger on Friday for their playoff warm up game.

The Ladycats’ first round matchup will be against the winner of Colmesneil and Zavalla.
