Porter nips Dayton in a close one 38-36

The Dayton Broncos dropped a close one to the Porter Spartans on Friday night at home 38-36. Dayton had a strong first half and led11-7 after the first quarter and then held Porter to just three points in the second quarter as they pushed their lead to 22-10 at the break. The Spartans had a big third quarter and out up 21 points to get within 36-31 after three quarters. Porter then outscored the Broncos 7-o in the fourth period in taking the win. Brice Payton led Dayton in scoring with 12. On Tuesday night, it was New Caney knocking off the Broncos 69-38. Jayden Jiminez finished with n points to lead the way in scoring for Dayton. The Broncos will travel to Cleveland on Friday night.

Tarkington takes care of Onalaska and Trinity

The Tarkington Longhorns improved to 3-2 in district play with wins over Onalaska and Trinity this week. Last Tuesday night, it was Tarkington spanking Onalaska 87-36. Brandon Dee finished with 24 points to lead the way. Also finishing in double figures was Braden Bostwick with15 and Garrett Lott had 10. On Friday night, it was the Longhorns needing overtime to dispose of Trinity 50-43. Blake Ellington had 16 points, and Trae Deck finished with 12 to lead the way.

Dayton shoots past PA Memorial 4-1

The Dayton Broncos flooded the Port Arthur Memorial goalie box for shots on Thursday night at home, and it paid off as four of those found the nets in a 4-1 win over the Titans during the Dayton Soccer Tournament. The Broncos wasted little time in getting good looks as a shot by Ismael Navarro just missed in the 6th minute, but one minute later, it was a different result with David Perez scoring on a breakaway, and Dayton had a 1-0 advantage. Navarro and Jorge Sifuentes both took shots on goals in the loth and 13th minute, but neither one could find the mark. That changed in the 2oth minute when Anner Aparicio beat the Port Arthur Memorial goalie for a goal to make it 2-0. The assists were by Ezequiel Garcia. The Titans did make things interesting briefly as they cut the deficit in half at the 35th minute with a score to make it 2-1. Three minutes later, the Broncos did respond with Nick Kopecky assisting Bryan Martinez for a goal in the 38th minute, and Dayton led 3-1. The Broncos then put the game out of reach in the 46th minute, with Alonso Puente scoring on a nice high arching shot to make it 4-1. Dayton will host New Caney Porter on January 26 to start district play.

Strong second half not enough for Lady Hornets in 49-34 loss

The Hardin Lady Hornets put together a strong second half at home on Tuesday night in district play against Anderson-Shiro. Unfortunately, it was a bad first half that proved to be costly as the Fighting Lady Owns left town with a 49-34 win. Anderson-Shiro jumped out to a 14-1 advantage in the opening quarter until a three-pointer by Haven Crump made it 14-4. The second period was much of the same as the Fighting Lady Owls outscored Hardin 19-8 to lead 33-12 at the half. Madison Boston did have six of her team-high 15 points in the quarter. The third quarter was owned by the Lady Hornets, though. Jumpers by Reese Parker and Maddy Fregia made it a 39-20 score, and then a steal by Fregia led to a lay-up by Boston and the deficit was down to 39-24, and Anderson-Shiro needed a timeout. Early in the fourth quarter, it was Fayth Adams hitting the offensive boards and scoring to cut the deficit to 42-28. Boston ended her strong night with a steal and score for the final score of 49-34. Parker added six points for Hardin, who was not helped at the free-throw line with just a 5 for 15 showing. Anderson-Shiro was 19 of 36 from the charity stripe. The Lady Hornets will host Trinity on Friday night.

Armstrong scores 22 in H-D win over Evadale

Hull-Daisetta guard Kaylei Armstrong may not be very big, but if you leave the freshman open, she will make you pay the price, and when you try to guard her tightly, she will find a way to get past you. On Friday night at home in a big district game with Evadale, Armstrong proved just why she is going to be a nightmare for opposing teams the next four years as she poured in 22 points to lead the Lady Cats to a nice 49-39 victory over the Lady Rebels. Armstrong scored 14 of her points in the first half, with 10 of those coming in the opening period. Hull-Daisetta jumped out to an early 7-4 lead on a bucket by Samantha Rose. Armstrong then nailed a three-pointer and bucket to extend the advantage to 14-10 after the first eight minutes. Midway through the second quarter, Vaquaylon Hoskins drove the bucket and scored to up the lead to 24-17. The Lady Cats would lead 28-25 at the break. Evadale cut the Hull-Daisetta advantage to 30-29 early in the third quarter, but the Lady Cats responded with a 6-1 run capped off by a three-pointer by Hoskins to make it 36-29. Armstrong then got a steal and score, and the advantage was up to 42-33 with 6:23 left in the game. Down the stretch, it was Armstrong connecting on four free throws down the stretch to secure the win. Rose added 13 points for Hull-Daisetta, and Hoskins chipped in with 10.

Big third quarter leads the way for Tarkington over Hardin

The Tarkington Longhorns started the second half on a 17-0 run, and that would be enough in grabbing a 61-35 district win over Hardin on Saturday afternoon at home. After Tarkington grabbed an early advantage thanks to a Blake Ellington three-pointer, the Hornets cut the deficit to 10-8 thanks to an offensive rebound and score by Carson Williams. Moments later, it was Williams again grabbing an offensive board and scoring to keep the deficit at 15-12. Williams scored the first 12 points of the game for Hardin. Late in the opening quarter, Colby Morris hauled an offensive rebound for the Longhorns and flipped the ball back in the bucket to make it a 19-12 lead. Tarkington then doubled up the Hornets early in the second stanza as Blake Ellington connected from downtown and then scored after grabbing a rebound, and the advantage was up to 24-12. Down by14, Hardin then went on a nice 11-3 run to get within 29-23, capped off by a three-point play by Colby Barrett. The Longhorns led 32-23 at the break. It was all Tarkington in the third quarter as they put the game away with a 20-2 quarter. Trae Deck scored back-to-back buckets, and then Dee Brandon nailed a couple of three-pointers, and the advantage was out to 49-23. The Hornets did get a nice trey from Caden Elmore in the final quarter to get within 55-33, but at that point, the game was already out of reach. Williams led Hardin with 13 points, and Elmore finished with 10. The Longhorns were led by Cameron Iterisano with 12 points, and Blake Ellington chipped in with n. The Hornets will travel to Trinity on Friday night while Tarkington will host New Waverly.

Lowe scores 25 in Lady Longhorns 47-38 win over New Waverly

Emily Lowe scored 25 points and had 6 steals to lead the Tarkington Lady Longhorns to a nice 47-38 win over New Waverly on Saturday afternoon at Tarkington high school in district action. Trailing by a point heading into the fourth quarter of play, the Lady Longhorns put the defensive clamps on the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth quarter as they held them to just three points. Lowe scored 10 points and had four steals in the final quarter alone. Tarkington started the game by scoring the first nine points to lead 9-o with a three-pointer by Martyna Proulx and a steal and bucket by Lowe. New Waverly then got it going and went on an 11-4 run to get within a deuce before a jumper by Lowe made it 15-n. Early in the second period, Chelsey Manner grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it a 19-13 Lady Longhorns lead. Lowe then grabbed a rebound after a Tarkington miss and scored, and the advantage was 26-17 with 2:40 left in the first half. The Lady Longhorns led 28-23 at the intermission. New Waverly started the third period on a 10-3 to move ahead 33-31 with 1:48 left in the quarter. Proulx then nailed a trey, and back in front again went Tarkington at 34-33. The Lady Longhorns then went defensive in the final eight minutes, and the score showed. Lowe had three steals in a span of just over a minute in which she converted into lay-ups on all three occasions, and the advantage was up to 45-36 with 3:05 left in the game. Tarkington then used nearly two minutes off the clock in their version of the four corners, and it paid off as the Lady Bulldogs had no answer in getting the ball back. Brianna Boddie added 13 points for the Lady Longhorns.
