ANAHUAC— Phase one of the Anahuac drainage improvement project is now underway, which should greatly improve drainage and aid in reducing flooding issues for the area.

Construction began on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and is expected to last through early February.

Areas of impact for this phase include North Texas Avenue from Sullivan Street to Fahring Street. Texas Materials, the county’s contractor, set up traffic controls and closed the intersection of North Texas Avenue and Sullivan Street for phase one work.

Overall, the project includes installing new storm sewers along North Texas Avenue, Work Street and Main Street to drain into Lake Anahuac.

The project will include reshaping the ditches along North Texas Avenue from Canal Street to Sullivan Street, as well as Work, Main, Hamilton and Houston Streets.

Additionally, the project includes street improvements, such as pavement reconstruction and driveway replacements, on North Texas Avenue, Work Street and East Main Street.

Adding roadside ditch inlets and laterals will help mitigate flooding on the roadways.

Phase one includes the construction of a storm sewer outfall to Lake Anahuac at the north end of North Texas Avenue, as well as the removal of existing pavement and the excavation of the outfall to Fahring Street.

Additionally, phase one includes the installation of a storm sewer trunkline, as well as installing ditch inlets and laterals.

During construction, expect detours, delays and heavy equipment in the area.
