CCSO Explorers Cameron Gonzales, LilliAnn Dueitt, Ian Nix and Kam Carter and mentors Sgt. Brian Orlando and Deputy Mariana Avalos prepare for the Space City Explorer’s Competition at the Houston Police Academy.

HOUSTON— Recently the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Explorers brought home some trophies after displaying a thorough understanding of various practices of law enforcement.

The CCSO Explorers attended the Space City Explorer’s Competition on Saturday, March 29 at the Houston Police Academy.

“These competitions mean a lot to the kids especially when they place in scenarios, they practice so hard for,” CCSO Sgt. Brian Orlando said. “For our Chambers County Explorers to take a first, second or third place in scenarios competing against other Police Explorers in large cities like Dallas, San Antonio, Travis County, Harris County, Border Patrol and many more, means they take their training serious and are dedicated.”

The explorers placed first in arrest/search warrant, third in burglary in process and third in intoxicated driver.

The competition tested knowledge, teamwork and practical skills in various real-life scenarios, including the above-mentioned, officer down and more.

“Throughout the event, our Explorers demonstrated professionalism and discipline as they competed in a series of realistic law enforcement-based scenarios,” a CCSO Facebook post read.

The explorers have participated in this competition since 2018 and this year they competed with one team made up of Cameron Gonzales, LilliAnn Dueitt, Ian Nix and Kam Carter. The explorers compete in multiple competitions around Texas year-round.

“Thanks to Sheriff Brian Hawthorne who believes in this program and has hired more than a dozen explorers to be dispatchers, jailers and deputies since this program started,” Orlando said. “And thanks to the Chambers County District Attorney, Cheryl Swope Lieck, who funds the program.”

Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Chambers County Annex in Mont Belvieu. Applicants must be 14 to 20 years old.
