MONT BELVIEU– It was the Barbers Hill defense that proved to be too tough on Friday night at Eagle Stadium against the Lufkin Panthers in a 35-7 win to open district play.

After a scoreless opening quarter, the Eagles grabbed the lead just a minute into the second quarter with Keagan Morton hitting Tripp Davis on a 15-yard score to make it a 6-0 lead.

Late in the first half, it was Barbers Hill adding to their lead with quarterback Brady Barrier scoring from a yard out, and the Eagles led 13-0 at the half.

Lufkin got a big play to start the second half as Kenny Waters sprinted 76 yards for a touchdown, and the Panthers had closed to within 13-7.

After a Cole Ackerman interception set Barbers Hill up at the Lufkin 17-yard line, Jamal Jones scored from 6 yards out a couple of plays later, and the Eagles lead was 20-7.

A couple of minutes later, it was Barrier hooking up with Davis on a 20-yard score, and the advantage was up to 27-7 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

Barbers Hill (4-1, 1-0), then put the game away just a minute into the fourth quarter as Barrier connected with Morton on a 16-yard score to run the lead to 35-7.

Barrier finished with 143 yards passing on 16 of 24 attempts to go along with two touchdowns. Barrier added 40 yards rushing and a third score while Jones led the ground game with 64 yards.

Morton caught nine passes for 91 yards while Davis added seven receptions for 66 yards and a pair of scores.

The Eagles will face Sterling on Thursday night at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown.
