Nerd Con is set for Saturday
MONT BELVIEU– Multiple fandoms are uniting on Saturday, Nov. 15, for Nerd Con 2025, which is set to bring a day of family-friendly fun to creators, artists and fans alike.
The event, which began in 2018, offers free admission and the opportunity for local residents to come out and make memories, all while getting to bask in the unique power of stories to bring people together, no matter which form or medium these stories exist within.
"So much of what we've tried to do here is to create an experience that is the kind of convention we'd like to go to and enjoy ourselves," said James Chisum, who is among the organizers for the event. "We wanted to really capture that feeling and provide something for everyone."
According to Chisum, Nerd Con has grown from approximately 300 attendees the first year to nearly 3, 000 in more recent years, with attendees from all over the state, into Louisiana and even some from different countries.
Chisum and his fellow organizers have teamed up with several local entities, including the Chambers County Library System, the City of Mont Belvieu, Eagle Pointe Recreation Complex, the Eastern Rim Funny Book and Vintage Con and Chambers County, all in efforts to bring the event to life and keep the event free of charge to attendees.
Local businesses, including Sonic, Raising Canes and Tropical Smoothie Cafe, among others, also contributed by donating items or gift cards, which will be used as prizes for contests, including the cosplay contest, and raffles.
Travis Huffman, an artist with Last Sentry Comics, is among the local residents looking forward to the event and the excitement it brings.
"I look forward to Nerd Con every single year. Last Sentry Comics has been a part of Nerd Con since the very first show," said Huffman. "I grew up in the Old River area and went to school in Dayton, but was close to Mont Belvieu, as well. I see a lot of familiar faces from my childhood and fellow creators I've met along the way."
Last Sentry Comics, which was founded in 2005 and currently operates in Pearland, is also among the artists who will be featured at the event. Huffman and fellow writer Travis Yarbrough will be among those available to speak with attendees, as well as offer merchandise to interested buyers and sign autographs.
A variety of celebs from the small screen, including actors from Family Matters, Growing Pains and Stranger Things, as well as voice actors from many beloved properties like Jem and the Holograms and Sailor Moon will be in attendance. The voice actors for Peanuts characters Sally and Linus will be on hand, as well as John Morris, who voiced Andy in Toy Story, and Mary Gibbs, who voiced Boo in Monsters, Inc.
The event will also feature karaoke, panels on drawing comics, a duck hunt for prizes, a caricature artist provided by the City of Mont Belvieu, as well as many opportunities to interact with the featured guests and participate in a Q and A portion with them.
Nerd Con 2025 will be held at the Eagle Pointe Recreation Complex, located at 12450 Eagle Pointe Drive in Mont Belvieu, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
