DPD invites community out for fun
DAYTON— Dayton Police Department recently hosted an ice cream social for the community to beat the heat while getting to know their local law enforceement, and the fun isn’t over yet.
The Dayton Police Department hosted Cuffs and Cops on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and the department will have its National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
“It’s just like any of the events that we do, it’s going to be getting to know our community,” Chief Shane Burleigh said. “Dayton isn’t a small town anymore. Not everybody knows everyone. It gets you out, gets you to meet your neighbors, meet your police officers, meet your first responders, meet the other organizations in your community.”
The Cuffs and Cops event featured officials from the DPD, the Office of Liberty County Constable Precinct 4, and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Sweet Scoops provided free ice cream for all to enjoy.
As for NNO, there will be lots of free fun and activities for the kiddos, including games, bounce houses, snacks and drinks.
Additionally, DPD will have cruisers from multiple law enforcement agencies, a helicopter, and the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department is bringing a fire truck.
Burleigh added that his department has noticed a trend in auto burglary, so during NNO, the department will be announcing a new initiative to tackle the crime trend.
Sponsors include Thrif-Tee Food Center, 7 Eleven and Starbucks, and some are bringing goodies for attendees.
Local organizations, including Journey Fellowship Church, will have booths set up.
If interested in having a booth, call DPD at 936-258-7621 and ask to speak with Lt. Eric Ibarra.
NNO will be at the Dayton Community Center, 801 S. Cleveland St.
