Tarkington Elementary School’s top 50 readers were treated to the Houston Rockets Read Nation Library Takeover on Tuesday, March 19, presented by Whataburger.

Students enjoyed meeting the Whataburger mascot, playing games for door prizes, and getting to pick out a book to take home in their special bags. After the session, many of the students received autographs from members of the Rockets organization.

TES Instructional Coach Cassandra Walulik explained that the program is intended to build a love for reading, one book and one child at a time.

“Rockets Read Nation promotes a love for reading by rewarding students who compete in the monthly reading activities from Nov. 1 through Feb. 29,” said Walulik. “Students tracked how many minutes they read daily on their reading logs that were sent home. “

TES Principal Edward Heard was excited that TES was chosen to hold this special celebration for the students who were the top readers from November through March.

“This success is a testament to the collective effort of our students, families, teachers, interventionists, paraprofessionals, instructional coaches, assistant principals and support staff,” said Heard. “It’s important to acknowledge that Tarkington Elementary is now among the top 1% of the participating elementary schools in the greater Houston area. We are honored for our achievements in reading, and this esteemed privilege reflects the outstanding contributions of every one of you.”

“I’m so proud of our students and staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Elna Davis. “Thank you to our families who have supported our students’ love of reading, which has led to increased achievement. Without your partnership this would not have been possible!”
