HOUSTON – A man was shot and killed Sunday night by an off-duty Liberty County officer working a second job, according to the Houston Police Department.

The officer- involved shooting occurred at the Doneraki Mexican restaurant located at 300 Gulfgate Center Mall after a customer who was escorted from the eatery at closing time around 11 pm was seen coming back into the restaurant with a tire iron.

At that time, an employee alerted the two offi cers working an off-duty job at the eatery.

Once the officers approached the man, he allegedly attacked the Liberty County officer with a tire iron before being shot multiple times, according to investigators with the Houston Police Department.

“The officer discharged his weapon more than once. The suspect immediately runs out of the location and passes away in the parking lot,” said Houston Asst. Chief Yasar Bashir in footage posted by KHOU 11.

That officer is employed by Liberty County District Attorney Jennifer Bergman’s office.

“As with any death under these circumstances, a full and thorough investigation must occur. HPD and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are now conducting the investigation with the cooperation of my office. At this time, the Liberty County District Attorney’s Office will refrain from providing additional details to avoid unnecessarily compromising the investigation. As the situation develops and at the appropriate time, we can and will provide more information,” said a statement from Bergman’s office.

That investigation is still underway, and officers are interviewing store employees and reviewing surveillance footage from the scene, said HPD.

The second off-duty offi cer on the scene of the shooting is reported to be a part of the Plum Grove Police Department, according to HPD.
