Man perishes in home fire

Shortly before noon today, a home fire on CR 3293 in north Liberty County claimed the life of 79-year-old Manuel Jesus Rodriguez even though his son made a valiant effort to save his father.

According to Liberty County Sheriff’s Cpl. James W. McQueen, a fire developed in the chimney of the home and quickly spread. Rodriguez who was disabled and in a back room was trapped by the fire and although his son tried to get to him, his efforts were unsuccessful.

The Cleveland Fire Department as well as Liberty County EMS personnel attempted to revive Rodriguez but their best efforts failed. Pct. 6 Justice of the Peace Judge Ralph Fuller made the scene and ruled that Rodriguez had perished due to smoke inhalation and thus no autopsy was ordered McQueen said.

Any further follow-up investigation of the fire is being handled by the Cleveland Fire Department.
