James Carroll Brotherton passed away on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023 at HCA Houston Healthcare Southeast in Pasadena, Texas under the care of Hospice with loved ones by his side.

Born on Jan. 6, 1946, to Edward and Juanita Brotherton. He grew up in rural Arkansas with a love of fishing, and the outdoors throughout his lifetime.

After leaving high school early, he joined the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War and in Germany.

He valued his service to the United States of America. Upon his return stateside he met the love of his life who was working at a cafe in in Cullen, Louisiana.

Dewanna Sue Swain and James Carroll Brotherton wed on Sept. 29, 1967.

The had two children, James Jr., and Kathy.

James always put his family first, working very hard to provide for them — sometimes working multiple jobs whether in Springhill, LA or in Liberty, TX.

James never missed a bingo game, a NASCAR race, nor a chance to eat catfish or shrimp.

He had a strong faith, and most importantly cherished time with family and friends telling a treasured story.

James is survived by his children James (Barb) Brotherton Jr. of Hopkins, MN; and Kathy Cabello of Dayton, TX along with two grandchildren Ashley Wells (Orlando) and Cliff Wells.

He is also survived by four brothers along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sue Brotherton; his second wife, Joyce Brotherton; parents, and siblings.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at Cook Cemetery in Liberty, TX, on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, beginning at noon.

Death may have taken our amazing dad, special grandfather, and cherished friend away, but he is always here with us. Just close your eyes and listen to your heart
