Samantha Rose Senior with her Homerun Ball. She is the first person to EVER hit a Home Run in an actual softball game here at Hull Daisetta ISD. “I have asked many people and teachers here, and no one can remember anyone hitting a homerun in a game,”

Sometimes the record doesn’t show how close a team is to making the playoffs.

Yes, the Hull-Daisetta Lady Cats finished the season 2-10, but the Lady Cats had some close calls, according to Head Coach Meah Herman.

“We almost beat Evadale in the second round of district. We were ahead in the 7th inning but ended up losing 11-7. Same situation the first time we played West Hardin. Up in the 7th inning due to a home run by Samantha Rose in the 6th. It is the first home run possibly ever by a Hull-Daisetta softball player. West Hardin came back in their last bat and won by a couple of runs,” said Herman.

“In the Sabine Pass game, we were up again in the 7th inning and didn’t get the win. The last game of the season was against High Island. We were down by nine in the first inning, came back, and got the win 12-9. We made the other teams work for their wins against us.

“These ladies played with heart all season long. I am looking forward to next season. All but two players will return,” said Herman.

Hull-Daisetta had a couple of firsttime players come out and did a good job for the Lady Cats this season.

They were Vaquaylon Haskins and Kaylei Armstrong.

Haskins wound up at the shortstop position after just two weeks of playing.

“Her natural athletic ability is how she ended up there, said Herman.

“It was amazing to see how quickly she developed and learned to play. Kaylei picked up the game so quick also with her just being a natural athlete,” added Herman.

“She took the time to learn and develop. She watched videos, asked questions, and started learning more than girls who have been playing for years. It is great to see athletes who truly want to be the best in everything they do,” Herman said.

An injury kept Haskins out at the end of the season, and Armstrong took over at shortstop after playing second base for most of the year.

Herman and the Lady Cats are looking forward to next season, and with all but two girls coming back, Hull-Daisetta should make a solid run at the playoffs in 2023.
