Is Well With My Soul

The words “It is well with my soul” have echoed through generations as a declaration of faith in the midst of sorrow, uncertainty, and pain. Written by Horatio Spafford after experiencing profound personal loss, this hymn is not a denial of hardship but a bold proclamation of trust in God. It reminds us that peace is not found in the absence of storms, but in the presence of Christ within them.

Scripture assures us that God is deeply aware of our struggles. “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee” (Isaiah 26: 3, KJV). True peace is not circumstantial; it is spiritual. When our hearts are anchored in God, we can say— even through tears— it is well with my soul.

Music has a powerful way of reaching places in our spirit that words alone cannot touch. Throughout the Bible, music was used to soothe, heal, and bring comfort. When King Saul was tormented in spirit, David played the harp, and the distress lifted. “And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took a harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well” (1 Samuel 16:23, KJV). This moment reveals how God can use music as a vessel of peace and restoration.

Worship music, hymns, and spiritual songs invite the presence of God into our pain. They quiet anxious thoughts and redirect our focus from the size of the storm to the greatness of our Savior. Music allows us to pray when words fail and to hope when our strength feels depleted. As we sing or listen, our spirit is reminded of God’s faithfulness, even when our circumstances remain unchanged.

The apostle Paul encourages believers, “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7, KJV). This peace is supernatural— it defies logic and rises above emotion. Music often becomes the bridge that carries us into that peace, helping us release fear and rest in God’s promises.

Declaring “it is well with my soul” is an act of faith. It is choosing trust over turmoil and worship over worry. When music fills our hearts with truth, it aligns our spirit with heaven’s perspective. No matter the storm we face, God remains faithful, and through Him, our souls can find rest. Even in the darkest valleys, we can sing with confidence and peace: “it is well with my soul.”
