Anahuac ISD talks budget
ANAHUAC— Kicking off the school year right, the school district met last week to discuss updates on the strategic planning program and the budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Anahuac Independent School District met on Monday, Aug. 25, where the board adopted a budget of $21.9 million for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Duhon noted that, based on revenue and expenditures, the district is facing a $1.4 million deficit.
“This number would be the worst-case scenario, and we’re predicting that maybe by being frugal on any expenses...we’ll be able to cut that down, just like we did this past year,” Duhon said.
Duhon noted that a primary reason for the deficit, other than increasing pay, is the hiring of 15 new staff members.
Both Duhon and Superintendent Cody Abshier, Ed.D., reassured that the deficit was not a concern, with Duhon commenting that the district is supposed to break even at the end of the year rather than make a profit.
“We are well prepared for anything happening,” Duhon said.
This year’s tax rate is set at $ 1.17690 per $100, the same as the adopted rate for 2024-25.
Abshier and Deputy Superintendent Daniel Andrews provided an update on plans for the school year, primarily regarding the progress of the Texas Strategic Leadership program.
Andrews said the district leadership team already had their first training, and the next training will include three teachers from each campus, chosen by the principals.
Next steps also include submitting blank school assignments to Region 5 to determine if the school curriculum is aligned with its intended purpose. Evaluations include content, pacing and more.
Abshier said the district wants to encourage independent reading to promote literacy among students, and Andrews stated that the district is becoming more proactive in seeking grant opportunities.
The district approved hiring an additional educational aid position at Anahuac Primary School.
