Rejoice, and Again I Say, Rejoice

In a world filled with uncertainty, heartache, and trials, it can sometimes feel difficult to find a reason to rejoice. Yet, the Apostle Paul, while imprisoned and facing great hardship, penned some of the most joyful words ever written in Scripture: “Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice” (Philippians 4:4, KJV). His circumstances were anything but pleasant, but his heart overflowed with joy — not because of his situation, but because of his Savior.

Paul’s reminder is both powerful and practical. He did not simply say “rejoice” once; he repeated it — “and again I say, rejoice.” This repetition shows the importance of choosing joy no matter what we face. Joy is not merely an emotion based on what happens around us; it is a decision rooted in who God is. When we “rejoice in the Lord,” our focus shifts from our problems to His promises, from our pain to His power.

The joy Paul speaks of is not dependent on earthly gain but anchored in eternal hope. Habakkuk expressed this same faith when he wrote, “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines… yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation” (Habakkuk 3:17-18, KJV). Even when everything seemed lost, the prophet chose to rejoice — not because of what he had, but because of who God is.

Rejoicing in the Lord is an act of faith. It declares that God is still good even when life is hard. It invites peace into our hearts where worry once lived. Philippians 4:67 continues, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When we rejoice, we open the door for God’s peace to enter. We stop allowing our circumstances to control us and instead allow Christ to sustain us. Joy becomes our testimony — a light to others who see that even in trials, we can stand firm with a smile because we know who holds our future. So today, whatever you may be facing, lift your heart in praise. Rejoice when the day begins and rejoice when it ends. Rejoice when prayers are answered and even when they seem delayed. For God is faithful, His promises are sure, and His joy truly is our strength.
