Commemorating lost loved ones
ANAHUAC— The holiday season can be especially difficult for families who have lost loved ones, which is why the Chambers County District Attorney’s Office offers a space for grieving and remembrance.
The 15th Annual Tree of Angels was held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, commemorating victims of violent crimes.
“It is a true blessing to live in a place where justice isn’t just sought after - it’s often achieved,” District Attorney Cheryl Lieck Henry said. “It is so evident in turnout we continually see at this event.”
Coordinated by Victims Assistance Coordinator Leslie Childress, the event serves to memorialize victims of violence and allows a place for families to grieve during the holidays.
The name of each person who has lost their life due to a crime in the county is read aloud, and an ornament with their name is placed on the Christmas tree displayed at the Chambers County Courthouse.
The ceremony was led by Lieck Henry, and Assistant District Attorney Mallory Vargas gave a speech, encouraging families to do something positive for others in remembrance of their lost loved ones.
“This community is beyond fortunate to have the dedication, support, and commitment to justice exemplified by Sheriff Brian Hawthorne, our judges, our prosecutors, and this commissioners court, and all of our staffs, particularly in cases of violence,” Lieck Henry said. “We are even further served by the resolve and passion of the deputies, patrol officers, detectives, and troopers of our local law enforcement agencies.”
Chambers County Attorney Ashley Cain Land lit a candle for those missing, and Pastor Danny Biddy prayed for both those in attendance and for those who were unable to attend.
Jon Finney provided soft melodies, and the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Explorers presented the flags.
Chambers County Commissioners Court and Judge Jimmy Sylvia read a proclamation honoring the ceremony and the lives lost to crime.
For the event, staff members Logan Silcox, Ashley Ulkie, Belinda Parker and Whitney Deckert helped in setting up and supporting the families in attendance.
