Liberty County Judge Jay Knight proclaimed the month of May as Elder Abuse and Awareness Month at the Liberty County Commissioners Court on Tuesday.

Members of the Adult Protective Services came before the court to receive the proclamation from Knight.

The APS investigates the abuse, neglect or exploitation of elderly or disabled adults who live in the community. Adults who are older than 65 years of age or those who have disabilities can become isolated or ill and may not have someone to care for or provide for them. Many older adults can be physically or mentally abused, neglected or exploited for their property, money, or income, including Social Security and benefits checks.

This proclamation was issued to bring awareness of elder abuse to the community of Liberty County.
