LIBERTY – It was a big day Tuesday for the Dayton Chamber of Commerce as they held their first-ever function on the east side of the Trinity.

Dr. Cody Abshier was excited to be a part of the event held at Liberty First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

“It was so kind of y’all to call and invite me to come and speak. It’s wonderful to see all of the great things that y’all have going on over on that side of the river, and you guys certainly have the right idea,” said Abshier of the efforts of the chamber in Liberty.

He focused on the Lee College Education Center of South Liberty County and its impact on the community, most notably the students of area districts like Liberty, Dayton, Hardin, Hull-Daisetta and Anahuac.

“Lee College provides a great service to our students, many of which are first- generation college goers and would not have the means or availability to attend college,” said Hull-Daisetta ISD Superintendent Tim Bartman in a statement read by Abshier.

Abshier gave several more examples and remarks from other area district representatives on how Lee College has impacted local students and the importance of building on that relationship.

He would go on to speak about how Mayor Carl Pickett and former KSHN owner Bill Buchanan worked to embrace the college from its arrival in Liberty. He not only commended the men but also believed they were good examples to follow.

With that, Abshier invited attendees to reach out to leaders at the school and offer them words of encouragement and thank them for their efforts with students, even providing pre-addressed envelopes and paper for those notes.

Abshier doubled down on his belief that the community needed to embrace one another and welcomed the chamber to Liberty.

Door prizes were donated and will be given to teachers in the school district.
