AHS senior selected for Babin’s student program
A local high school student was selected for a program under Congressman Brian Babin’s office, where she will learn about the intricacies of various businesses that make up Texas.
Anahuac High School senior Tammy Ly was selected to be part of Babin’s Students Congressional Advisory Council, where she has already begun learn about various industries and potential internship and job opportunities.
“Having the chance to represent our community as a member of the Student Congressional Advisory Council has been an incredible experience,” Ly said. “Through SCAC, I’ve been able to meet and collaborate with other passionate students to learn more about our district and the industries that uplift us.”
Special Projects Director Rachel Machiavello said the program includes tours of a forestry museum, Big Thicket National Preserve, sawmills, NASA, the Port of Houston and various farms within the agriculture industry.
“As we travelled across Houston, I met with dockworkers, marine biologists, and congressional leaders who each had a drive to invest in the next generation—our generation,” Ly said. “Each story I heard fueled my conviction to become a voice for students in our school and beyond.”
Program participants also visit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and may have a chance to Zoom call with Babin’s legislative team.
Machiavello said when visiting these places, the students are encouraged to ask questions, not only about operations, but also about how legislation has impacted the industries.
“I’m excited to utilize the knowledge I’ll gain throughout my time as a council member to make a meaningful impact in our small town, and to inspire my peers to do the same,” Ly said.
