ANAHUAC– Planning for a new animal shelter continues to move forward as the Anahuac Municipal Development District steps up to help make things a reality.

Board members looked over preliminary plans Oct. 21 of the animal shelter being considered. AMDD is looking to contribute up to $100,000 toward the city of Anahuac shelter.

A construction company is expected to look over the plans, once finalized, for a cost estimate. Office Manager Annette Abernathy told the board that 14 small lots along Miller Street have been secured for the facility.

Abernathy reported that she is working with a local business to add a large digital Welcome to Anahuac sign, also along Miller Street. AMDD also funded the city's digital sign in front of City Hall.

In other matters, the board discussed the possibility of building a sidewalk from Kansas Avenue west to Main Street on the south side of Miller Street. Abernathy and board members were expected to meet with engineer Mark Dessens of Schaumburg & Polk, Inc. on construction and cost details of a sidewalk. AMDD is looking at a grant from Houston-Galveston Area Council to fund the sidewalk project.

The board also discussed a grant request from the Community Hot Meals Program for a new freezer. The program volunteers cook, serve and deliver dozens of hot meals to local senior citizens each Tuesday.

The freezer being used has broken, and the group planned to buy one to keep at a member's home in Double Bayou. AMDD directors discussed the requirement that items funded by AMDD be located within the city of Anahuac.

The board approved a donation of up to $2,000 to fund a freezer under the condition a location within the city be found to keep the appliance.
