AMDD buys land for animal shelter
ANAHUAC– Anahuac Municipal Development District took a step toward a new animal shelter with approval to purchase two lots of land at the Sept. 16 meeting.
AMDD is partnering with the city of Anahuac for a new facility and is acquiring property to hand over to the city.
Pending approval from legal counsel, AMDD will purchase two parcels of undivided property from Bobby Castle for $500. Other landowners along the strip on Miller Street have indicated they would donate land for the facility.
AMDD Office Manager Annette Abernathy and Board Chairman Janice Jircik reported on the recent committee meeting regarding plans for the new facility that include climate control and separate areas for healthy animals and unhealthy animals.
AMDD has earmarked up to $100,000 for its share of the project. The current city animal shelter is also on Miller Street, adjacent to the Crawfish Hideaway parking lot.
In other matters, Abernathy reported on the installation of two security cameras at the boat ramp on Lake Anahuac. “No Dumping” signs will also be posted to help curb the dumping of trash and other items at the ramp. It was noted that city employees have kept the area mowed well.
Abernathy also reported that she will move funds from Stellar Bank to Anahuac National Bank to create two $100,000 Certificates of Deposit. AMDD is solely funded by a ½ cent per $1 sales tax that is generated from businesses within the city of Anahuac. Monthly revenues average about $11,000.
The board also discussed its desire to install sidewalks, especially along the south side of Miller Street. Directors discussed possible options, including grant avenues. Abernathy will check with the Texas Department of Transportation for guidelines and restrictions in construction and location of sidewalks on Miller.
