EC picks up 20th win of the season
WINNIE– Mikeala Quave scored 17 points, and the East Chambers Lady Buccaneers knocked off Anahuac 51-25 on Friday night in a District 22-3A contest.
The win was the 20th of the season for the Lady Buccaneers, moving them to 5-4 in district. The Lady Panthers dropped to 10-10 on the season and 2-7 in district play.
Anahuac was led in scoring by Lanicia Schonberg, who scored 10 of her team high 15 points in the second half. Schonberg finished 9 of 13 from the free-throw line. She also added a couple of nice blocks on the defensive side of the ball.
East Chambers jumped out to a 7-3 lead on a runner by Jimena Vargas. The Lady Buccaneers led 13-5 after the opening quarter on a bucket by Jayda Leday.
The second period saw a Taylor Trainer offensive rebound and score cut the deficit to 15-9.
East Chambers then went on a 15-2 run for the rest of the second quarter, with Quave scoring inside, and a steal and score by Jadynn Smith just before the first half ended gave the Lady Buccaneers a 30-11 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Quave scored on a drive, making the score 34-12 and then Schonberg answered with a nice move of her own, pulling Anahuac within 34-14. '
Just before the end of the third period, it was East Chambers running the fast break to perfection as Quave assisted to Leday for a score, and the lead was 47-17 heading into the fourth period of play.
The Lady Panthers put the defensive clamps on the Lady Bucs in the final quarter by holding them to just four points.
Schonberg made the play of the night with a nifty steal at one end and then converted for a bucket at the other end, making the score 48-24.
Anahuac outscored East Chambers 8-4 in the fourth quarter.
Trainer added six points for the Lady Panthers and Callie Henicke finished with five. Smith had 12 points for the Lady Bucs and Leday also finished in double figures with 10.
Anahuac will host Hardin on Friday night, while East Chambers will host Warren.
