Extension Agent Talks Programs
Chambers County Extension Agent Idua Olunwa presented a seminar on June 24 on many programs offered through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service. The programs receiving the most attention from participants centered around the $10,000 home improvement grant and a United States Department of Agriculture $40,000 low-interest loan.
Olunwa spoke of his desire to see "people move from a mobile home to a foundational home," adding that the USDA loan is designed to help persons achieve that goal.
The Extension Agent also spoke on ways property owners can make money by building and renting out small homes, especially on or near the water.
"There is a lot of opportunity out there," Olunwa said, referring to the expected growth in population and interest in Chambers County over the next few years.
Another avenue for the $40,000 loan program, available to homeowners of any age, would be to build an additional dwelling unit, such as a mother-in-law unit, Olunwa added.
The $10,000 home improvement grant is available to homeowners 65 years or older with income limitations.
Participants asked many questions about the grant and the loan during the question-and-answer session.
