ANAHUAC—Although in the very early stages, crews are making headway on the construction of the new county library.

Work began on the new Chambers County Library in Anahuac, and as of Thursday, Nov. 20, construction is about 6% complete.

The $4.5 million project is expected to be 8,263 square feet, with plenty of large windows, an outdoor space and much more.

"We're excited," County Librarian Molly McGinty said. "It should be a really nice, bright space."

McGinty added that the staff looks forward to having a large story-time room, outdoor space and study rooms.

The new features should pair well with the library's various programs, including the summer reading program.

This past spring, the construction site was cleared to make way for the new facility.

Over the last few weeks, the building layout and the structural foundation piers and footings were completed, according to Michael Gafford, the county's building maintenance director.

Underground plumbing and a major portion of the storm system were installed, and underground electrical work is underway. Next steps include pouring the foundation concrete, according to Gafford.

The library will be joined by the Chambers County Historical Commission, which will operate a museum to complement the office space.

"We're looking forward to being able to collaborate with them," McGinty said.

As of now, much of the library's collection is in storage and will become available to the public again upon completion of the new library.

McGinty shared that books in good condition will be brought back out, but the library plans to purchase many new books to update and freshen the collection, complementing the new facility.

The new library will be at 215 S. Galveston Ave., Anahuac.

The library is still welcoming patrons at the temporary location, 608 Washington Ave., Anahuac. The library is open from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Progress will provide more updates as construction continues.
