There will be a change in leadership for the Chambers County Republican Party, as current Chair David Redd will not be seeking another term. However, a familiar face to those on the grassroots level is throwing his name in the hat.

Current Vice Chair Donnie Self recently made it clear that he wants to lead the local GOP at the county level.

"I believe that politics starts from the ground up," Self said. "What it's going to take to move Chambers County forward, I believe I'm the right person for that, and I believe that we have the people in our party right now that are going to be able to make that happen."

He added that most want to be involved at the federal or state level, but making a difference begins at the local level.

"I am proud to be a 4th generation Texan and a Texas-first conservative. For over 20 years, I've been actively involved in politics, and I've learned that real solutions don't come from the top down - they start right here at the local level," Self said on his campaign website. "Strong families, strong churches, and strong local parties are what make Texas great, and that begins with us."

Self points to his time with the party, as just an everyday member, to parliamentarian and currently vice chair.

"My primary goal is to see more people turn out for elections, and I believe we can do that through civic engagement and education," Self said, adding that less than 15% of the state voted in the recent election.

Self explained that a "shallow minority" shouldn't determine who will represent the majority.

He said there are common-sense things that everyone should be working together on, such as protecting children and lowering property taxes, which need voter turnout to achieve.

Self added that he intends to organize several events that bring the community out to connect with each other, similar to the Charlie Kirk memorial event hosted in Beach City in September.

"Almost everything we do, we do as a group. It's called a party for a reason," Self said. "The minute you start making it an individual cause, you've already lost."
