Councilmember Delores Terry and resident Rodney Harrison passed around a petition to the residents of E. 1st Street to rename the street to Johnson St., in honor of Esther and Reuben Johnson. At the April monthly City Council meeting, council voted and passed a resolution to change E. 1st St. to Johnson St. Family, friends, city and county officials gathered on Saturday May 8, 2021 for the unveiling of Johnson Street.

Mr. Reuben C. “Sugar Bear” Johnson was the primary member in numerous veteran related organizations. He served his country as a combat Marine of the Vietnam War era, receiving a purple heart and several other awards for demonstrating exemplary veteran support for all veterans’ rights. Mr. Johnson’s beloved wife, Mrs. Esther Johnson, passed away on January 26, 2021. Mrs. Johnson was a beloved mother, friend, and community volunteer. She was a life member of the American Legion as well as Sisters of Services. She was a pillar of her community and faithful member at North Mount Olive Baptist Church. She enjoyed helping people by giving, cooking, and serving. Her life was dedicated to the best interests of the community and her family.

We want to thank both Mr. and Mrs. Johnson for their lifelong dedication and support of various organizations in and outside of Cleveland, Texas.
