On Sunday night, officers responded to a call at the Old Trinity River Bridge in Liberty about a possible drowning. When the officers arrived, they were told a man had jumped off the bridge into the water but had not been able to escape the water.

Juan Morgan, a 27-year-old man from Crosby, and his friend were fishing in the river when they observed people jumping into the water. The two men decided to try jumping in the water as well. One man was able to swim out of the water, but Morgan was reported to have had trouble and disappeared into the water.

Due to recent rains, the Trinity River water level has risen, bringing with it dangerous currents and undercurrents.

The Liberty Police Department, the Liberty Fire Department, the Tarkington Fire Department, the Cypress Lakes Fire Department, and the Texas State Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens worked together in the efforts to find Morgan. The search was continued into the late hours of the night and was re started early the following day.

Tragically, Morgan’s body was discovered around 10:50 AM Monday morning near the area he was reported to have entered the water.
