Margaret, known as “Maggie” by her friends and “Gammie” by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully at her residence in Tyler on July 17. She was born to James Calvin “Jake” Smyth and Aileen Powell Smyth in Snyder on Sept. 28, 1931.

Margaret moved to Liberty at age 8 when father Jake assumed the role of editor and publisher of the Liberty Vindicator. Margaret graduated from Liberty High School and attended Baylor University. Although she also resided in Beaumont, San Antonio and Tyler, she always considered Liberty her home.

Margaret is survived by her son, James Patrick Woods and his wife Greta; grandson, Ryan and his wife Laura; and grandson Tyler; her daughter, Susan Speer, husband Gary; and granddaughter, Katherine.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Aileen Smyth.

Memorial services will be held at Allison Funeral Home in Liberty on Monday, July 22, at 10 a.m. with interment immediately following at Cooke Memorial Cemetery. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation beginning 1 hour prior to the service.

Margaret will be missed by many but has passed into the loving hands of God. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of East Texas, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, TX 75701, 903-266-3400, hospiceofeasttexas.org.
