Psalm 23 reminds us that in life or in death, in times of plenty or want, God is good and worthy of our trust. The psalm uses the metaphor of a shepherd’s care for his sheep to describe the wisdom, strength and kindness of our God. “ The Lord is my Shepherd” implies a profound yet pra c t i c a l working relationship between a person and our creator our Savior.

Before David became king of Israel, he was a shepherd.

He took care of and protected flocks of sheep, and he wrote this psalm describing God as a shepherd and God’s people as His flock. Through this beautiful metaphor, Psalm 23 gives us invaluable insights into the character of God and His plan for His children.

The meaning of Psalm 23 is that God will provide for our rest and nourishment. That doesn’t mean our life will always be easy. Instead, it means that he will be with us helping us along the way. The message of the Gospel is not an absence of pain and trials. Rather that God will not abandon us in them. This psalm of David reminds us that even in the darkest valley of life God is still with us and we can have hope.

The meaning of Psalm 23 is still powerful today. God is with you. He will provide for you. He will walk with you through the storms of life. And he will bless you. Hold onto him.

Lord, help me to keep my heart pure and undivided. Protect me from my own careless thoughts, words, and actions. And keep me from being distracted by my wants, my desire s , my thoughts on how things should be. Help me to embrace what comes my way as an opportunity, rather than a personal inconvenience.

Remember the Good Shepherd loves His sheep sacrificially, giving His life for each of us. Furthermore, His sacrificial love isn’t the end of the story—He holds authority over death, hell and the grave. Death could not hold him! I am thankful for our risen Savior!
