Leo Wilson's reelection efforts are underway
Two-term incumbent House District 23 Rep. Terri Leo Wilson has officially announced her candidacy for another term, and she is bringing a pair of major endorsements to the table from Gov. Greg Abbott and President Donald Trump.
The Republican lawmaker is pushing her agenda and focusing on some of her efforts and how they impacted Chambers County specifically.
"Serving the people of Chambers County is the honor of my life, and I am running for re-election to continue fighting for safer communities, stronger families, and the men and women who protect us every day," Leo Wilson said.
In a campaign announcement last week, Leo Wilson homed in on law enforcement, public safety and first responders.
"I will never stop working to ensure our law enforcement officers, firefighters, and prosecutors have the support and tools they need to keep our communities safe," she said.
Leo Wilson shared several areas where financing and resources were directed toward Chambers County during her time in office, specifically citing the Rural Law Enforcement Salary Assistance Grant Program.
She cited grants totaling around $1.4 million that benefited the Chambers County Sheriff's Office, prosecutors at the District Attorney's Office and the County Attorney's Office.
According to the release, funds from those allocations strengthen law enforcement retention, support prosecutorial functions, and help ensure that violent offenders are held accountable.
The legislator also touted her support in fighting the opioid crisis and helping put funds in the hands of cities and the Chambers County Public Hospital District No. 1.
Finally, Leo Wilson points to her support for HB 98, the Wade Canon Act, which provides annual screenings for Texas firefighters to detect cancers linked to toxic exposure.
"From securing law enforcement funding to protecting our firefighters through the Wade Cannon Act, public safety is not just a priority for me. It is a commitment," Leo Wilson said. " I look forward to continuing this work with the support of President Trump and Governor Abbott, and I am honored to have their confidence as we launch our campaign."
A former Mont Belvieu city manager, Nathan Watkins, is challenging Leo Wilson in the race that includes Chambers and portions of Harris and Galveston counties.
