Speeding to a Stop
ANAHUAC— If you get pulled over for running a stop sign that wasn’t there last week, well, it probably wasn’t.
A stop sign ordinance was passed during the Anahuac City Council meeting on Monday, Sept. 8, and the stop signs were set to be installed this week.
Signs will be at the intersections of Davis Avenue and Fannin Street, Davis Avenue and Bowie Street, Oak Street and Kansas Avenue, and Belton Lane and Kansas Avenue.
Resident Randall Decker initially requested stop signs due to concerns about speeding, which was then discussed among the council during several meetings.
“We talked about people speeding through Oak Street and Davis Street, and people on Belton Lane. I’ve got people going 82 mph out there,” Mayor Charles Hightower said during the July 14 meeting.
During the Aug. 11 meeting, Hightower suggested adding a crosswalk and a pedestrian sign for safety measures for students who walk to school.
Hightower also suggested repainting the crosswalk on Miller Street.
