Needing a big spark offensively in the second half, the Dayton Broncos got that, and then some from Gilbert Sanchez as the senior scored all 20 of his points in the second half, and that would be enough to make Dayton a 60-55 overtime winner over the Cleveland Indians in the district opener for both teams on Friday night at the Broncos Gymnasium. Cleveland got a game-high 26 points from Antonio Wheeler. The Indians jumped out early on as a Wheeler steal and bucket made it 8-2. Dayton quickly came back and got back-to-back three-pointers by Donovan Orebo and Houston Gault to tie the score at 8-apiece. Tanner Boufford then got into the act and connected from downtown, and the Broncos led 11-8. Cleveland then went on a 12-5 run to move ahead 20-16 thanks to a three-pointer by Wheeler with 2:38 left in the second quarter. Dayton closed within 22-20 late in the first half with a trey by Boufford. The Indians would lead 24-22 at the break. Midway through the third period, Cleveland built a 30-25 before a three-pointer by Sanchez and a three-point play by Gault gave the Broncos the lead at 31-30. The Indians scored the final three points of the third quarter to take a 33-31 advantage heading into the fourth quarter of play. Both teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter, with Wheeler scoring on the inside to give his team a 36-35 advantage with 6:05 left. Cleveland then built a 46-38 lead before back-to-back treys by Sanchez with 1:49 left closed the gap to 46-44. With the Indians leading 52-49 with 3:1 seconds left, Sanchez was fouled while attempting a three-pointer and he went on to make all three free throws to send the game into overtime. In the extra time, it was Dayton outscoring the Indians 8-3 to win the game. A free throw by Landon Baldwin made it 58-55, then a pair of free throws by Braylen Cook made it a five-point and put the game away. Gault finished with 13 points while Boufford and Orebo each finished with 8-points apiece. The Broncos will travel to Anahuac on December 30 for a non-district game.

Dayton led 11-5 after a quarter of play before the Lady Indians came back and played even in the second period as both teams scored 14-points apiece, and the Lady Broncos had a 25- 19 halftime advantage. The second half was all Dayton as they won the third quarter 15-7 and then put Cleveland away with an 18-5 advantage in the final eight minutes. Kyra Keener led the Lady Broncos in scoring with a career-high 22 points. On Tuesday night, it was Dayton falling to Lake Creek 49-27. Jerrica Keener finished with 14 points, and Allie Davis added 7. The Lady Broncos travel to Waller on December 29.

Devin Fregia had a nice game with a double-double by scoring 17 points and hauling in 12 rebounds. Liberty then returned home on Friday night fell to undefeated Huffman 67-43. Grey Soileau led the Falcons with 24 points and 12 rebounds. The Panthers return to action on December 29 as they travel to Evadale for a non-district affair with the Rebels.

The Liberty Lady Panthers rode a big first half to another district win on Tuesday night at home as Chase Sylvia’s Lady Panthers led by 13 at the break and then finished up with a 51-42 win over Hamshire-Fannett to stay perfect in district at 2-0. Drelyn Willis scored 9 of her team-high 14 points in the first half to lead the way. Willis got Liberty off to a quick start by nailing a three-pointer to give her team an 11-7 lead. Early in the second quarter, Madyson Goudeau connected from downtown off an assist from Olivia Moore, and the advantage was up to 18-10. Midway through the second quarter, it was Cheyenne Williams scoring on a three-point play to make it 23-12. Just before the end of the first half, Willis scored on the fast break, and the Lady Panthers enjoyed a 31-18 lead. The advantage ballooned to 35-18 early in the third period as Goudeau got a steal and scored at the other end. The Lady Longhorns then put together a 10-4 run the rest of the quarter to close within 39-28 after three periods. Liberty opened the fourth quarter with a Goudeau bucket thanks to an assist from Raeshell Elliot to make it 41-28 before Hamshire-Fannett got back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to 41-34 with 3:46 left in the game. After a Lady Panthers timeout, the Lady Longhorns did not slow down and scored another four points, and things were even tighter at 41- 38. Leading 42-40, Willis scored on a drive to make it 44-40, and then a Moore bucket off the give and go from Kamryn Turner made it 46-40 with a minute remaining to put the game away. Goudeau added 13 for Liberty, while Moore chipped in with 8 points. Williams chipped in with 7 points. The Lady Panthers return to action on December 29 at home against Barbers Hill.

There were plenty of smiles as the Liberty Police Department helped children fulfill their Christmas wishes for the annual Blue Santa Presents Shop with a Cop. Police Officers from the LPD walked the Liberty Walmart’s aisles with eleven children who carefully selected their favorite toys.
