Winnie- Brianna (B.B.) Boddie of the Tarkington Lady Horns finished as the MVP of the West Team as her side fell to the East 69-36 on Thursday night in Winnie at the SETCA All-Star Game. Boddie was all over the court for the West with five steals and seven points. Boddie had a pair of free throws in the first quarter and then scored five straight points in the third quarter, and her three-pointer cut into the East side’s deficit at 39-30 with 2:32 left. Boddie then scored on a drive late in the period to make it a 45-34 game. Dayton’s Kyra Keener had a free throw in the fourth quarter for the West. Keener also played well and finished with three steals and four rebounds. The East Team put the game away with an 18-2 fourth quarter, with Kassie Chavez of Legacy Christian getting the MVP for her side. Dayton’s Allie Davis was also selected to the West side but could not play as the recent senior graduate of the Lady Broncos had surgery a couple of months ago. In the first half, the East led 13-8 after one quarter and then increased their lead to 31-21 at the half. After the West cut the deficit to 28-21 on a three-pointer by Huffman’s Kelly Farrell, the East ended the first half on a trey by Chavez to lead 31-21 at the break. Chavez had nine points in the first half to lead all scorers.

The West side was never really threatened as they jumped out to early leads in all three games. In-game three, Knepper had a kill to make it 24-4 16. Whitmire then followed the Knepper kill with a kill of her own to end the match. The MVP of the West Team was Skylar Nappier of Huffman.

Read moreThe Dayton Broncos hosted a 7 on 7 State Qualifying Tournament on Saturday morning at Houston Methodist Field at Bronco Stadium and Dayton High School. 16 teams took part in the four pool’s with Beaumont Westbrook and Port Neches-Groves both qualifying for state. Dayton played the Indians in the last game of pool play and knocked off PN-G 26-24. The Broncos won the match with no time remaining as Blayne Denton found Camron Cooper from 12-yards for the walk-off win. With Dayton trailing 18-13 in the second half, Denton connected with Ashton Garner on a 21-yard score to move back in front 20-18. The Indians then got a 1-yard touchdown pass with 1:35 left and the clock running before the Denton to Cooper winner. The Broncos dropped their first game of the morning to Eisenhower 13- 7. Dayton moved in front 7-0 on a Denton to Garner score. The Eagles then tied the game at the half and then won it in the second half. Up next was Kingwood Park, and the Broncos quickly jumped in front with a Denton scoring strike to Garner from 45-yards out to move in front 6-0. The Panthers then scored 20-straight points before Dayton started to rally. Denton hooked up with Garner on a 43-yard pass play down to the 2-yard line in which Cooper was on the receiving end of the scoring strike from Denton to pull within 20-13. The Broncos then ran out of time and fell short to Kingwood Park.

As I talked to Devin via a phone interview on Saturday night, I realized just how special this kid is and will be. Fregia is headed to Beaumont to play football for Lamar University, and the Cardinals are getting a good one.
