Read moreDown by eight points at the half, the Crosby Lady Cougars turned the defensive pressure on in the second half and held Dayton to just eight second half points in taking a 45-38 victory over the Lady Broncos in non-district play at Dayton High School on Tuesday night. Allie Davis had a big first half for the Lady Broncos in scoring 12 of her 17 points. Trailing 10-6 in the opening quarter, Davis scored on a drive to get Dayton within 10-8. Down 12-9 after a quarter of play, Davis nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 12-apiece. Davis continued her scoring, and after back-to-back buckets on drives, the Lady Broncos led 20-17, and Crosby needed to talk about it. The Dayton run continued with a Jerrica Keener threepoint play to build the advantage to 24-17 with 1:57 left in the first half. Mary Robinson then got into the act and grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it a 28-17 lead, and the Lady Broncos were on a 12-0 run. The Lady Cougars ended the first half on a modest 5-2 run to cut the deficit to 30-22, heading into the locker room. It looked as if Dayton was going to pick up where they left off to start the third quarter as Davis nailed a three-pointer and was fouled, and the Lady Broncos had a 33-22 advantage. The game then changed, and Dayton was held scoreless the rest of the quarter as Crosby ended the period on a 15-0 run to lead 37-33 after three quarters of play. The Lady Cougars built the lead to 41-35 midway through the fourth quarter until Davis scored off an assist from Amber Kelly to cut the advantage to 41-37 with 4:07 left. That would be the closest the Lady Broncos would get the rest of the way as Crosby held Dayton to just a single point in taking the win. Jerrica Keener finished with 7 points. The Lady Broncos will host New Caney Porter on Friday evening.
Read moreOn Friday night in Humble, the Dayton Broncos finished up the 2020 football season with a 45-6 loss to Kingwood Park at Turner Stadium in district 12-5A-II play. Dayton jumped out in front and then could not score the rest of the way as the Panthers finished the game by scoring the final 45-points. The Broncos jumped out quickly, with quarterback Blayne Denton finding Donovan Orebo on a 32-yard scoring strike to give Dayton a 6-o lead with 10:23 left in the first quarter. Kingwood Park then responded with a Juan Garcia 4-yard run, and after the Anthony Sterner PAT, the home team led 7-6. The score stayed the same until the second quarter when the Panthers increased their lead on a Hudson Dezell to Cavan Adrian’s 17-yard strike to make it 14-6. Kingwood Park then made it 21-6 with 1:15 left in the first half as Code Brady scored from 6-yards out. The Panthers were not done as Sterner booted a 40-yard field goal with no time remaining in the first half, and the advantage was 24-6 at the break. Dezell then put the game away with a couple of touchdown passes in the third quarter, with the first one coming at the 4:49 mark of the quarter and an 18-yard strike to Adrian and a 31-6 lead. With just 55 seconds left in the quarter, it was Dezell hooking up with Patrick Overmyer from 17-yards out, and the score was 38-6. Garcia rounded out the scoring for Kingwood Park early in the fourth quarter by running in from the i-yard line. Dayton finished the game with 354-yards of total offense. Denton passed for 200-yards on 15 of 29 attempts, while Orebo caught six-passes for 104 yards. Kameron George added two receptions for 45-yards while Daveon Washington rushed for 107-yards on 19 totes.

However, with everything changing by the minute, Liberty Head Coach Jason Wickliff had to find a new opponent quickly, and that was Class 5-A La Porte, and the Bulldogs came to town and took care of the Panthers in a 90-57 win. La Porte was hot from the outside and finished the game with 14 three-pointers. Liberty jumped out to a quick 4-2 advantage a couple of minutes in with a trey by Kaden Nolan. Tied at 5-apiece, the Bulldogs started to get it going from downtown and after back-to-back three-pointers that would give the visitors an n-5 advantage with 5:17 left in the first quarter. La Porte kept it going, and after an 11-0 run that saw them lead 16-5, the Panthers Kieron Joiner scored on a drive to stop the run. Down 22-9, Nolan nailed a trey just before the first horn sounded to get Lib-erty within 22-12 after one. The Bulldogs built the lead to 32-17 before a nice drive and bucket by D.J. Harris made it 32-19 midway through the second period. La Porte then ended the quarter on a 143 run to lead 46-26 at the half. Nolan had 8 of his team-high 13-points at the break. The second halfwas much of the same, and the Bulldogs finished the third quarter leading 69-43 after three quarters of play. In the fourth quarter, Joiner did have a nice finish as he grabbed the rebound on one end and went the length of the court for the bucket, which made the score 81-51 at the time. Joiner finished with 12 points while Vincent Harris also finished in double figures with ii. Patrick Flowers chipped in with 8. Liberty travels to Woodville on Friday night.

Leading the way for Head Coach Karen Slack’s bunch was senior Kennedy Evans, named the District’s Defensive MVP. Skylar Nappier of Huffman was named the district’s MVP, while teammate Brenna Jones finished as the Offensive MVP. Liberty had Abbie Knepper and Katrina Tran named as first team selections, while Kylie Bishop and Morgan Vaughn were named to the second team. Honorable Mention picks for the Lady Panthers were Madyson Goudeau and Emalee Villarreal.

Named as the district’s MVP was sophomore Josie Rollins. Junior Makinnley Smart was named the district’s Middle Hitter MVP. Very deserving and once again being named the Coach of the Year was Regina Snell. Tarkington, who also advanced to the post-season, grabbed a couple of top honors on the list. McKensie Doolittle was named the Defensive MVP, while teammate Sydney Whitmire finished as the MVP setter. Landing on the first team for Hardin was Georgia Vance and Kylee Land. Making the second team was Maddy Fregia and Haven Crump, while Rory Perez and Julianna Smart were Honorable Mention selections. The Lady Longhorns also had a pair of players make the first team in Georgia Weeks and Emily Lowe, while Savannah Boyd was named to the second team. Troy Errington is the head coach for Tarkington.
